Popcorn does not always have to be sweet and sugary. The Foodpairing tool learns us that popcorn shares aromas with many different types of ingredients. Even algae, passion fruit and many herbs!
It might sound funny, but there is an aroma in popcorn that smells like mushrooms, which is shared with both algae and shiso leaves. Therefore they are tasty together. Shiso, Asian herb belonging to the mint family, we can describe as smelling like: mushroom, almond, lemon peel, coriander seed, honey and spruce. Shiso is mostly used fresh, but you can also easily dry it. Passion fruit and popcorn connect through their floral, rose-like aromas.

Apart from the aromatic match between the ingredients, this flavour mix finds the perfect taste balance. Passionfruit brings in the sweet and sour, while Algae counterbalance with saltiness (so don’t use too much extra salt) and add a pleasant umami taste. Here we’ve chosen for the green algae, but you can also use any other type of dried algae (nori, wakame, kombu).

- Shiso leaves (1), dried (can be easily dried in the microwave)
Coriander seeds (1)
Olive Oil

Preparations
The ingredients of this mix (algae, passion fruit, shiso, coriander) can be balanced according to your own taste (follow the given proportions if you want to be sure). Grind all ingredients shortly until you obtain a powdery yet still crunchy mix. Pop your corn and drizzle some olive oil on top. This will make the herb mix stick to the popcorn. After adding the herb mix according to you taste, sprinkle some salt over your snack.
